Pressing apples is fun — but most of our patrons (especially the toddlers!) need a little guidance, and we rely on our volunteers to help make sure apples are pressed efficiently, safely and enjoyably! No press experience is needed. Volunteers work with an assigned Team Leader, who makes sure that everyone understands their tasks and that the press is used safely. We schedule in four-hour shifts so no volunteer has to take too much time from their weekend days. Morning shift volunteers arrive at 8:30 am and help set up, then work until 12:30 pm. Afternoon volunteers arrive at noon (so the hand-off of work is smooth), help patrons until 3:00 pm, and spend the last hour or so cleaning up and putting away our equipment. While we don’t ask Volunteers to do heavy lifting, the job is sometimes physical - and some patrons need more help than others. We encourage patrons to press their own apples with our guidance, rather pressing them ourselves, but activities such as lifting and moving buckets of pomace and juice, and moving equipment and supplies are part of the job, so it’s helpful if our volunteers can actively participate.
